Lecture Synopsis & Talking Points

Name five memorable things about Chinatown, and they are likely small businesses or linked to business.

Drawing from his new book Shopkeepers of Chinatown, historian and author Dr Loh Kah Seng takes you into the old town as a unique shopkeepers’ world.

Discover:

  1. How the simple act of buying and selling goods and services on a large scale gave rise to Chinatown’s rich atmosphere and social life; and

  2. The remarkable stories of several surviving heritage businesses, including why the founders started the trade, and how their successors are fighting to keep the businesses alive.
